Food technology is a practical subject which requires the application of knowledge and understanding when developing ideas, planning, producing products and evaluating them. Candidates should develop knowledge and understanding in the functions, working characteristics and processing techniques used in food production.
Units studied and a brief description of their content
During the second year of the course candidates will complete the final stages of Unit 2: Design and making practice in the first term; which is 60% of their final GCSE grade. The remainder of the year will build their knowledge and understanding of food materials and production methods used in the food industry in preparation for the written paper (unit 1)
The work is divided into three phases:

- Pprocesses and Manufacturing

Unit 1: Written paper - 40%
120 marks / 2hours/ one paper with two sections- all questions are compulsory. Section A30 marks A design question based on context supplied before the exam Section B 90 marks Covers all aspects of the specification content
Unit 2: Controlled Assessment- 60%
90 marks a single design-and-make activity selected from a choice of set tasks, consisting of the development of a made outcome and a concise design folder and/or appropriate ICT evidence. These tasks are reviewed by the examination board every two years.
The design folder should consist of approximately 20 pages of A3 paper and students should spend approximately 45 hours on this independent activity. As part of the evidence submitted, students should include photographs of the finished products as well as photographs at various stages of the process.
