Y7 & Y8 Mathematics

Overview

The focus is for teachers to develop students numeracy and mathematical reasoning so that they understand and appreciate the importance of mathematics and to ensure that by the end of the key stages, students are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant scheme of learning.

Units studied and a brief description of their content

The Mathematics course covers Number, Algebra, Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change, Geometry and Measures, Statistics and Probability, in line with the NEW GCSE course for 2017 entry.

Students study topics at the appropriate level of challenge, with differentiated tasks as appropriate. All Schemes of work are targeted towards students achieving at least 3 levels of progress across the 5 years of secondary education.

Assessment

With regards to assessment, National curriculum levels have officially been removed and not replaced, with the scheme of learning making clear what students are expected to have learnt by the end of a key stage. As there is not a national prescribed system for ongoing assessment and reporting, the department tests key skills fortnightly and assesses progress after every 3 topics in all year groups to assess progress.

Support

The Academy subscribes to the website www.mymaths.co.uk and students can access this from home. This website allows students to consolidate and practise skills as well as prepare for assessments such as Optional Tests and GCSE. Your child should see their Maths teacher for the information about logging on to the site.
