Science is a required subject that must be studied throughout secondary education at both KS3 and KS4. KS3 now refers to students in Y7 and Y8 at Manor and these year groups are generally split into classes of mixed ability.
There is a stretch and challenge group for the most academic and a nurture class for our less able students. All classes are timetabled 5 lessons of science each week and will follow the same route of topics across the 2 years.
The curriculum consists of a mixture of biology, chemistry and physics topics and is designed to prepare students for the challenges they will meet at KS4.
We currently use the Activate Science scheme of learning, which uses both theoretical and practical lessons to deliver the national curriculum in an interesting and engaging way.
There are 3 main assessment points throughout each year as well as end of topic tests. Homework is set weekly and will be collected, marked and recorded by the class teacher.
Students are expected to make a minimum of 3 levels of progress throughout their time in the academy with at least 1.5 levels at lower school. We believe that an understanding of science is crucial to creating a well-rounded individual and as such try to find relevant real-life applications for all that we teach.
