Raising Aspirations at Manor Community Academy

Over the last few months, Year 10 and 11 students at Manor have been lucky to experience talks from a variety of further and higher education providers, plus local companies, to help them find out about what opportunities are open to them as they continue their educational journey beyond Year 11 here!

Local universities have been well represented, with a fabulous presentation by Manor Community Academy alumnus Emma Flint, who delivered a superb presentation on behalf of Newcastle University. Student feedback was outstanding with pupils commenting that they loved hearing about Emma's journey after Manor and they enjoyed finding out if "Newcastle University was the one for me!"

Sunderland University sent presenter David Metcalfe to talk to our Key Stage Four students, who were surprised to hear that there are 37,000 different courses available for post-18 study at 350 different institutions! With those figures, David made it clear that there is "something for everyone" at this level! When asked what they liked least about the Sunderland University presentation, students could not comment, saying "nothing! I enjoyed it all!"

At Manor Community Academy, we are well aware that university study is not for everyone, so to that end we have welcomed local employers Huntsman Tioxide and Hart Biologicals, both of whom shared the range of opportunities available at these prestigious businesses. Students noted that what they liked most in these presentations was "I was able to find out about a career that I may not otherwise have considered" and "I liked being told about the opportunities available".

There are more events planned for the coming months, during which students are strongly advised to #getinvolved to support them in #RaisingAspirations !
