Girls and Gadgets

As part of our continued partnership with Teesside University, we were delighted to offer the opportunity to Year 9 students to attend the 'Girls & Gadgets' workshop in April. Offered by the School of Computing at the University, the event aims to encourage more girls to participate in this stimulating and growing career path.

The event began with an inspiring keynote speech from Amy Nicholson of Microsoft which the girls really enjoyed. They then participated in two workshops. In the first 'Cover Girl' session, the girls explored how magazine covers can be manipulated using PhotoShop with techniques ranging from smoothing skin to changing body shapes and the implications of such manipulation.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed this session, saying 'I really enjoyed seeing the difference that PhotoShop could make' and 'I loved learning to use PhotoShop and discussing how it is used in the media'. The girls then participated in a stimulating and challenging Games Programming workshop during which the developed new skills.

Overall the day was a great success and as ever we would like to extend our thanks to all at Teesside University who provide such inspiring experiences for our students. Girls left the day noting 'there is a wide variety of jobs involving computing' and 'we can do anything we want in life' and this shows how powerful such visits can be!
