ICE Inspire Competition

During March, a small group of year 7 students became involved in the Institute of Civil Engineers Inspire regional competition. Students were first tasked with creating a short video highlighting the career of civil engineers to their peers as well as a short essay to demonstrate their understanding of what civil engineers do.

Our students created a video in the style of a news report and focused upon the role, salary, qualifications and the impact, of civil engineers. Manor were then chosen to make up the final six teams from a total of 23 entries, and were invited to participate in a finals day at Newcastle College Rail Academy.

During the finals day each team was asked to make a relief shelter with specific specifications. The students had a variety of resources they could use and a quantity of money to buy the materials.

Once the structures were built the students explained them to the judges then had to all go inside whilst water was sprayed at them. Manor did not place in the top three, however one of the judges stated they were impressed with some of our design features.

The students involved had a fantastic day and learnt a lot about the skills involved with engineering.
