KS4 GCSE Music

1. Listening & Appraising (20% of overall marks)

* Students must complete a 1 hour listening and appraising test, based on the five areas of study. The five areas of study are:

  • Rhythm & Metre.
  • Harmony & Tonality.
  • Composing.
  • Timbre & Dynamics.
  • Structure & Form.

The listening involves:

  • Popular Music in the 20th & 21st Centuries .
  • Western Classical Music.
  • World Music from different cultures.
  • Exam in May of Year 11.
  • Externally assessed by AQA.

2. Performing (40% of overall marks)

* Students must perform one SOLO and one GROUP piece. Must be recorded by the end of March in Year 11. Internally assessed and moderated by AQA.

3. Composing (20% of overall marks)

* Students must compose a piece of music in a chosen style, based on 2 areas of study. This must be done during supervised time in school. (25 hours). Must be recorded by the end of March, Year 11. Internally assessed and moderated by AQA.

4. Composing & Appraising (20% 0f overall marks)

* Students must compose a piece of music based on a set task by the exam board. This must be done during supervised time in school. (20 hours).

* Students must then appraise your composition (2 hours). Must be completed and recorded by March in Year 11. Externally Assessed by AQA.
