Overview

Edexcel GCSE ICT 10 is a relatively new and interesting qualification completely centred round the ?digital world?. The course is split into 2 Units and equates to 1 GCSE grade. In Unit 1 you will explore how digital technologies like mobile phones impact people?s lives, organisations and society. Unit 2 is a practical unit where you will broaden and enhance your ICT skills and capabilities by working with different digital tools to produce solutions to specific tasks.

Units studied and a brief description of their content

Unit 1:

Living in a digital Word you will cover the following topics: -

  • Communication through digital devices (Mobile phone features, use, design, internet safety, socialising on the internet, and the digital divide).
  • The use of digital technologies to keep in touch on the move and on trips (netbooks, blogging, open source software).
  • Entertaining digital devices (game consoles, multimedia systems, networks, downloads, on demand services, connecting to the internet).
  • Safety (safe working environment rules and lays when using digital devices, software, storage and backup).
  • Shopping online (advantages, disadvantages, fraud, personal details, stay safe, setting up online accounts).
  • Health and Well-being (mobile phone apps, health and safety for everyone, big brother effect, games)

Unit 2:

Living in a digital Word you will cover the following topics: -

Pupils will expand their skills of using the internet to gather information and will learn new ways to present it through different digital media such as videos, animation, audio, posters, interactive quizzes, podcasts and websites. Pupils will also expand their knowledge of databases and spread sheet models depending on the scenario given.

Assessment

Unit 1:

1 hour 30 minute externally assessed exam paper based on ?Living in a digital world?. It is worth 40% of your grade. This will take place in the summer of Year 11.

Unit 2:

40 hour?s internally assessed controlled assessment based around Using Digital Tools, the assignment is set by the exam board and is worth 60% of your grade. This Unit is all about ?doing? and is very practical, producing products such as Invitations, e-cards, digital posters, presentations, spreadsheets and much more all for a scenario which is given to you. This controlled assessment takes places over Year 10 and 11 during lesson.
