Discover is an alternative curriculum which is topic based and is targeted at pupils who may struggle with traditional lessons in Literacy and the application of transferable skills in years 7, 8 and 9. It is a combination of Geography, History, R.E. and Citizenship.
Discover is a subject that allows pupils to use their skills of investigation and questioning by exploring the world and issues that will affect them.
Each student is given an assessment folder for each year. They are given regular written assessments and an assessment grid which has been designed specifically for this subject based on transferable skills, literacy and topic knowledge. The grid is colour coded blue for skills tasks, red for literacy and green for topic knowledge. When presenting work to the students, the colours are consistently used so that they are aware of what type of tasks they are completing.
To show progress of the content within each unit, pupils are also given a pre and post-test which is marked on topic knowledge.
This primary based model promotes learning through fun, creativity and challenging tasks, whilst developing the pupils' literacy skills and independent learning
