Pupils will develop their historical knowledge, their understanding of chronology, interpretation, source analysis, and improve on the organisation and communication of their written work, through a range of topics. As with Key Stage 3, each topic pupils study has an overarching enquiry question.
At GCSE level, our pupils follow the Edexcel History B course. The course is split into four topics:
Topic 1: The American West c1845 – c1890
Topic 2: Controlled Assessment: Life in Britain During World War II
Topic 1: Medicine, Treatment and Public Health Through Time
Topic 2: The Transformation of Surgery c1840 – c1914
Each module is worth 25% of the GCSE. The Controlled Assessment aspect of the course is split into three questions, which are completed after February of Year 10. The other three modules are sat as externally moderated exams, and each paper is 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. Each paper is worth 54 marks (50 marks for content and an additional 4 marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar). The History GCSE at Manor College of Technology encourages independent learning and research, as well as the ability to structure writing in an appropriate manner.
The course also encourages pupils to hone their source analysis and evaluation skills, and to be able to scrutinise the usefulness, reliability and purpose of a source of information.
Pupils who take GCSE History will have to chance to on a residential to London to visit the Science Museum and the Old Operating Theatre and Herb Garrett.
The course has proven to be a very popular option at GCSE in recent years, and results continue to improve.
